Camille Cottin wears Omega for issue 1 of AMAZING magazine. Photographed in London by Richard Phibbs, the actor tells Juliet Herd about her roles in House of Gucci, Stillwater and Call My Agent!, while good-naturedly debating subjects ranging from ageism and sexism in the film industry, to the nature of fame and success.

The scene-stealing star of French series Call My Agent!, which became a binge-worthy hit on Netflix during lockdown, Camille Cottin is unquestionably on a roll. Her mesmerising turn as Andréa Martel, the frenetic, driven, gay agent to a host of France’s biggest movie actors, catapulted her to international attention. Then, much like the tendency for multiple buses to come at once, Camille found herself with a raft of Hollywood films to make and promote as well.

She stars opposite Matt Damon in Tom McCarthy’s dramatic thriller, Stillwater, in which Damon plays an oil rig worker from Stillwater, Oklahoma, who travels to Marseille to try to exonerate his incarcerated daughter (Abigail Breslin) for a murder she says she didn’t commit. Camille plays single mother and struggling theatre actress Virginie, who forms an unlikely bond with Damon’s roughneck Bill Baker. It’s largely due to the sensitivity and naturalness with which she tackles the part that what could have seemed a completely unbelievable liaison somehow makes sense and works.

How did she find Matt Damon? “He was very much the character to me,” Camille smiles. “He was my Bill and my little girl, Maya [played by ten-year-old Lilou Siauvaud], was amazing. Filming in that flat in Marseille, we were almost like living in the movie. Everything seemed close to reality. I was discovering [Damon] little by little, exactly like my character does.”

Glitzier than Stillwater is Camille’s role in Ridley Scott’s hotly-anticipated House of Gucci biopic as the girlfriend of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), grandson of fashion house founder Guccio Gucci, whose murder was orchestrated by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga). Buzz about the film, set for release in November and with Al Pacino, Jared Leto and Jeremy Irons in supporting roles, has been building ever since photos swamped the internet of Driver and Gaga looking sensationally chic and Italian in 1980s ski gear on set. “The costumes and settings were amazing and so true to that crazy eighties and nineties Italian jet set way of living,” says Camille, who describes having Driver and Gaga as co-stars as “a blessing”.
